HISTORY
Nazareth Convent, Bajpe, was established as the fourth branch house of the congregation on September 29, 1930, by the founder, RFC Mascarenhas. After establishing the congregation in 1921, he was moved by the challenging conditions faced by poor and uneducated people in remote villages. His vision aimed at spiritual development and service to humanity through the Bethany Sisters, who dedicated their lives to teaching in village schools. Extending this mission to Bajpe, the sisters initially lived in a rented house within the church premises. Sr Josephine served as the first superior of the convent, with Sr Raphael assisting in school activities. The Pioneer members were Sr Josephine, Sr Raphael, Sr Emilda and Sr Dolores.
In 1931, the sisters began their educational ministry at Little Flower Primary School. Although services were briefly discontinued in 1938, the convent reopened in 1940 under Sr Bernard’s leadership in a rented house located about two furlongs from the church. They later purchased four acres of land, and Mr Cyprian Aroza Pai donated an additional two acres. This allowed them to establish a permanent convent, now called Nazareth Home. Over time, the sisters’ presence and diverse apostolates strengthened, supported by the people of Bajpe and parish priests. Little Flower School is stepping into its centenary year in 2026.
Responding to the need for a girls’ high school, Holy Family High School was established on July 16, 1964, with Sr. Valeria as the first headmistress. Celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year, the high school has educated thousands, with many alumni occupying honorable positions in society. 2005 marked a significant milestone in the history of Holy Family High School with the establishment of the Nazareth Convent Auditorium. Over the years, the school has become a beacon of excellence, producing talented students who have made their mark at the state and national levels.
The convent also celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in September 2005, marking decades of dedication and service.
