Lourdes Convent, Kanajar

The parish priest named Rev Fr Santhan Fernandes invited the sisters of Bethany who was impressed by the pastoral service of Bethany sisters at Christ the King Church Karkal and urgent need of education was the main purpose of starting the convent in this locality of Kanajar. So three sister’s stepped in to this place with prayer and courage. Sr Valentine was the acting Superior. Sr Denisia and Geraldine willingly accepted to be the pioneers of the convent which was erected on May 31^st 1963. Rev Mgr William Lewis the Vicar General of the Mangalore Diocese blessed the convent dituated near the school, which was taken on a rental basis.  The then Superior General Mother Macrina and her four councillors were present along with the parish priest Fr Santhan Fernandes on this event.

On July 29^th 1969 the Vicar General Mgr William Lewis Blessed and laid the foundation stone for the new convent building. On 26^th June 1970 the new convent the present one was blessed and inaugurated by the Bishop of Mangalore, Rt Rev Basil D’souza. The Superior General Mother Macrina along with her councilors and other 50 sisters of the neighboring convent and 8 priests also the people of Kanajar marked the event.

Growth in the Educational Apostolate

In the year 1975 Sr Nazreen became the first sister Headmistress in the school, after the retirement of the lay headmaster named Mr Sundar Shetty.  Sisters were teaching in the school and also were teaching catechism in the parish. Sr’s were visiting the families and helping the sick and needy.  In the school special attention was given to the poor and backward students.
