Lisieux Convent Puttur

Lisieux Convent Puttur has honour of being the first branch of Bethany Congregation and first mission station. The house was named as Lisieux Convent under the patronage of St. Therese of child Jesus, who was canonized in the year 1925. The foundation of the convent building was laid on 14 September 1926. Sr Lourdes was installed as first superior. Education and faith formation was the first mission of the convent.

To meet the need of education on 1st June 1925 St. Francis Xavier boy’s School was inaugurated and blessed by the parish priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Aloysius Rodrigues. When the need for the education of girls was felt in the locality, a second School Little Flower Girls Elementary School, Kurnadka Puttur was started in the year 1927.

Sr Gertrude was one of the pioneer, very zealous missionary who served in this mission station among the Tulu Christians. She was also engaged in teaching catechism, needle work and various handicrafts.

Being the first branch house of Bethany father founder had special love for the community and he would visit the community frequently along with then superior general Mother Martha. This first mission station of Bethany congregation was apple of founder’s eye.

Later on since the need for the English Medium was felt by the local people in 2005 Bethany English Medium School was started under the hard labour of Sr Prashanthi, the then headmistress of Little Flower Higher Primary School. At present the sisters strive hard to keep alive the spirit of the founder and the pioneers under the leadership of Sr. Loyoline with the band of 12 sisters. At present other than the education, the community caters to the needs of the pastoral ministry of 4 parishes namely Mai de dues, Maril, Uppinagadi and Needpally. Sisters are also engaged in attending SCC meetings and also visiting the houses. Bethany Lay Association started with 20 members in the year 2009 Sr. Doris being the animator. Sr Assumptha, the General councilor received their Final commitment of 13 members on 20.10.2012 and gave them ribbons with their I D Puttur varado has the privilege of having 5 vocations for the congregation.

Today, the convent continues to thrive, with 8 Sisters engaged in various ministries, including education, pastoral care, and social outreach with the able leadership of Sr Prashanthi the Superior.
