A one-day seminar on Jolly Phonics was held at Sacred Hearts’ Pre-Primary School, Kulshekar on 28th June for all the teachers. The aim of the seminar was to help teachers understand and use Jolly Phonics in their teaching to improve early reading and writing skills among young children.
Sr Mariola, the Education Coordinator of the Mangalore Province, welcomed the resource person and addressed the gathering. The Headmistress of Sacred Hearts’ School, Sr Rita Saral, was also present throughout the seminar and encouraged the teachers.
The seminar was conducted by Ms Nayana Sequeira, a well-experienced and enthusiastic Jolly Phonics trainer. She explained the importance of phonics in early education and how it helps children learn to read, write, and speak correctly. She made the session lively and interesting by using various teaching aids, puppet shows, storybooks, videos, and practical examples.
Ms Nayana shared creative ideas and fun activities to teach phonics sounds to young learners. She emphasized that children should first listen, then speak, and only later learn to write the sounds. She conducted several interesting activities, including:
- Spider and ant game
- Snake, mouse, and bee blending activities
- Word formation using the sounds: S, A, T, I, P, N
She guided the teachers on how to form simple words and short sentences using these basic sounds. The activities were easy and enjoyable, helping the teachers understand how to use Jolly Phonics in their classrooms effectively.
The seminar was interactive and engaging, and all the teachers took part actively. Ms Nayana also showed how to prepare low-cost teaching aids to make learning more effective and fun for the children.
At the end of the seminar, Sr Rita Saral, the Headmistress, distributed certificates to all the participants and appreciated the efforts of the trainer and the staff.
This seminar was truly helpful and enriching. It gave us new ideas and practical tips to make phonics fun and easy for our little learners. We are excited to use these new methods in our daily teaching.
