History

“Woman is a symbol of power, God’s finest and beautiful creation, without whom any creation is possible. She’s the one who gives birth and nurtures. Within her is the power to transformation.”

With this realization and to impart best quality Education, the Founder of the Bethany Congregation Rev Fr Raymond F C Mascarenhas, established St Joseph’s Hostel in the year June 14th 1939, in the beautiful surrounding of Rosa Mystica, for the destitute and poor girls of rural areas who did not have an easy access to education.

As the years passed, along with girls, the educational opportunity was also provided to the boys of younger age. Over the years the strength of the Hostel grew from few hundred to thousands and became a temple of learning which provided education to thousands of students. Several girls and boys who got early access to good and quality education are now working at various positions in reputed fields for the upliftment of the society.

Inspired by the simple lifestyle and selfless service of the Bethany Sisters, several girls from the Hostel joined and a few to other Congregations.  Boys too followed the call of God and became priest. They are now spreading the love of God all over the world.  This is a matter of immense pride for us, because this orphanage/hostel became a cradle of vocation to religious life and priesthood. At one time the orphanage accommodated about 130 girls and 40 boys who lived in a separate boy’s cottage. At present only girls are housed here.

Late Sr Succursa was the founding warden of the Hostel. Late Sr Concilia, Sr Perpetua, Sr Laetitia, Sr Gemma, Sr Doris, Sr Veera, Sr Carmelita, Sr Joanina, Sr Doris,  Sr Noreen, Sr Germine, Sr Veera, Sr  Electa, Sr Helmina, Sr Carmelita, Sr Jonina, Sr Stephany, Sr Sevrine, Sr Edmund, Sr Agnes, Sr Jessy Lavina, Sr Gracy Monica have helmed the role of warden of the Hostel and taken it towards prosperity.

Currently Sr Nathalia Dias renders service as the warden, assisted currently by Sr Marecelilne. They work together as a team, for the total well being of the hostellers paying attention to their all round growth.

Till the year 2006 this Hostel was functioning with the full support from the Bethany Congregation and with minimum financial aid from Government. From March, 2007 the Hostel was upgraded as student hostel Age group 12 to 18. At present the total strength of the hostellers is 30

Development and growth of a child is an art. This art cannot be taught by anyone, but should be learnt by oneself. The institutes efforts are commendable in laying foundation towards this art. All students are provided with the opportunities towards self-development. Discipline, service, patience, punctuality, competitiveness, self-awareness, critical thinking and life skills necessary to survive in this world are provided here. Along with this great care has been taken for the physical and mental health of each child.

St Joseph Hostel remembers and thanks the support provided by Bethany Congregation in the past 86 year Many committed correspondents and wardens have rendered their valuable service to this Institution. We pray to St Joseph, the patron of this Hostel, to impart his gracious blessings on the benefactors and donors of Hostel who have contributed and supported for the development of each and every child who have stayed here.
