HISTORY
The 32nd community of the Mangalore Province was established on July 15, 2017, at Hebbal (K), a small village in Shorapur Taluk of Yadgir District, Karnataka. This village falls under Hebbal (K) Panchayath and is part of the Gulbarga Diocese. It is located 70 km west of Yadgir district headquarters and 473 km from the state capital, Bengaluru.
In 2015, Most Rev Dr Robert M. Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga Diocese, invited the Bethany Sisters to address the needs of the poor and marginalized in this region through education. Responding to the call, Sr Edmund and Sr Prema Gonsalves were sent to undertake the educational apostolate. Having gained mission experience in Bidar, they volunteered to serve the underprivileged children of Hebbal (K), aligning with the diocese’s vision for upliftment through education. Initially, the mission was affiliated with Bethany Shanthi Nilaya, Humnabad, in the Bidar district.
Currently, the community is engaged in Education Apostolate. Sr Zeena Menezes serves as the Superior, with Sr Jyoti Lakra and Sr.Vinisha Rodrigues actively contributing as teachers at St Alphonsa English Medium School. The sisters also visit nearby villages, creating awareness about the importance of education and supporting the community through various social initiatives.
The convent was canonically erected on July 15, 2017, under the leadership of Sr Cicilia Mendonca Provincial Superior and was blessed by Rev Robert Michael Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga.
