HISTORY

Rev Sr Jyoti, the former Superior General, responding to the appeal of Archbishop of Gandhinagar Diocese Stanislaus Fernandez SJ sent delegates to the second Assembly of the Archdiocese in August 2003. Correspondence, contacts and visits from the Sisters to see the missions in different places continued for a couple of years. Finally Vadgam mission was accepted as the area of the apostolate. The three sisters on 3rd June 2006 stepped for the first time in Ahmadabad. They learnt Gujarati for two months after which they were sent to different communities of the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar for mission experience.

On 1st October 2006, on the feast day of Little Flower, the community was erected by Rev Sr Wilberta, the Superior General. The members of the first community were Sr Loyoline, Sr Leena Pereira, Sr Regina D Souza and Sr Saroj Macwan. Sr Loyoline was the first superior. The first community was staying at Rupal village in Vadgam taluk. After nine months they shifted to a small house at Limboi village which was bought by the Congregation. In the same house they started L.K.G and U.K.G having 25 students from Limboi and Rupal villages. At the beginning they faced a lot of problems and difficulties from higher caste people blaming of conversion, and the Christian presence in Hindu area. In their panic the Parish Priest Fr Isidore Almeida was a strong support and encouragement in the mission. On 14th April 2009 the hostel building was inaugurated by Sr Inviolatha, the then Provincial Superior.

The pioneer sisters moved to the hostel building which was put up by the Congregation in 2009 in which they were running the school and residence for the sisters. In 2010 they started a hostel for girls of the dalit community. There were many drop outs. In 2012 there were 15 girls of the Tribal community and a few were Christians. On October 1st 2013 an impressive building was put up by the Congregation to cater to the education of the poor children.  The building was inaugurated by Rev. Sr Wilberta and blessed by Rev. Bishop Stanislaus Fernandes S.J, the Archbishop of Gandhinagar diocese. Sr Mariette BS, the Provincial Superior, of Mangalore Province, unveiled the plaque.

August 13, 2016 is a historic day in the annals of Bethany Convent, Limboi, Gujarat.  Rev. Thomas Macwan, the Archbishop of Gandhinagar Diocese, Ahmadabad, blessed the new Convent building and officiated at the thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration. Rev Sr Rose Celine BS, the Superior General, inaugurated the newly constructed convent building. Rev Sr Cicilia Mendonca BS, the Provincial Superior of Mangalore Province, unveiled the plaque.
