Genazzano Convent, Taccode

Genazzano Convent, Taccode owes its origin to Rev Fr A Piadade DSouza, the Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Taccode, who made a special request on 13^th June, 1937 to Fr Founder RFC Mascarenhas for the opening of a convent in his parish. Sr Piya, Sr Pauline, Sr Purifica, and Sr Justa were sent to Taccode on 7^th July 1937 for the mission of education through the parochial school, Viz, St Joseph’s Elementary School. They resided in the house offered by Mr Martin DCunha at Kaikamba, Taccode one Kilometer away from the parish for a period of one year. The parish priest had leased a plot of one acre to the sisters near the Church. They built the convent building in that plot and Fr RFC Mascarenhas the Bethay Founder named it Genazzano Convent.

The community of Genazzano Convent was dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Counsel by a decree of erection dated 21^st July, 1937. Sr Pia was installed as the first superior of the community.

St Mary’s Primary School was opened on 8^th April, 1940 in Karinje village in a thatched house at a distance of one and a half kilometer away from the convent. And later it was shifted to the convent premises. To facilitate admissions to St Mary’s School an Orphanage was established on 2^nd June, 1941 for students from I to V Std. It was closed later. The Convent building was reconstructed in 1990 in view of accommodating the elderly sisters.
