HISTORY

Rosa Mystica – to the casual listener it gives an idea of a rose flower. Indeed it is a Rose but not of this earth. ‘Rosa Mystica’, Mystical rose is the title given to Mary the Mother of Jesus who is the favoured the grace filled creation of God, the lovely woman chosen by Him to be the mother of His Son Jesus. She is the heavenly rose, the Mysterious Rose – a rose of rare beauty nay of mysterious beauty which can neither be comprehended by the human mind, nor described by the human tongue, nor captured by human art.

Rosa Mystica has become a familiar name today to the people of Mangalore, as the name of an institution. Fr Founder Mgr RFC Mascarenhas who was a man of vision and deep intellectual insight saw the future prospectus of this area. He had a plan for this barren land that once was a haunted area, with thorns and thistles, stones and rocks, where, as contemporaries report voices in the air could be heard with no human person around and where cobras and vipers had a free run. Indeed people dared not walk alone in this area.

The man of vision and man of action that he was, he lost no time in executing his plans for this dry land. He was determined to make it a beautiful garden for our heavenly Mother. He dedicated the land to Blessed Virgin Mary, the ‘Mystical Rose’ and called it Rosa Mystica and began the work under the patronage and protection of this benevolent Mother. His trust and confidence in her has not been in vain. On 15th October, 1931 at 10.30 am he laid the foundation stone for a building for the future convent. The auspicious day dawned for the installation of the new community at Rosa Mystica on 11th February, 1932 the Feast of our Lady of Lourdes.

Rosa Mystica Convent, graced by the presence of our Blessed Mother’s Grotto, has become a place of profound devotion and hope. Sisters, formees of various stages, and people from various regions gather to pray the Rosary, seeking and receiving blessings through her intercession. This growing devotion to our Blessed Mother makes Rosa Mystica a true Pilgrimage of Hope, inspiring all who visit to deepen their faith and trust in her loving care.
