“You were poured out like a libation. You have fought the good fight; you have finished the race; you have kept the faith and a merited crown awaits you” 2 Timothy 4:6-7

Sr M Roshni Monteiro BS (62) passed away on Monday June 7, 2021 at Fr Muller’s Hospital Kankanady. She is the daughter of the late Francis Monteiro and the late Joanna D Almeida, sister of Fr Joseph Monteiro SJ and Fr Ivan Monteiro OCD, hails from Sacred Heart Church, Maril, Puttur in the Diocese of Mangalore. She has four brothers and three sisters.

Sr Roshni was transferred from St Raymond’s Convent, Vamanjoor to Santa Cruz Convent, Kulshekar two years ago after her retirement from active service. She was a spirit filled person. All through her teaching career she was teaching Mathematics and was a Headmistress in many schools. Wisdom and insight flowed through her words though she was a person of few words. She had the talent of making others happy through her humour. She did not seek any consideration to herself rather always sought the well-being of others. She suffered silently without a word of complaint. As a Bethany sister she was a model to be emulated by one and all. She lived the motto as the handmaid of the Lord to its perfection saying ‘Yes’ to all the assignments entrusted to her care willingly and joyfully. As a teacher and an educator she has host of students, parents and colleagues who held her in high esteem. She had no expectations of achievements and accolades. She trusted in the providence of God in the exercise of her responsibilities. She was a good orator and stage manager at celebrations. She was a dear friend and guide to all those who knew her. Her siblings and family loved her dearly and they felt that she was the uniting factor of mind and hearts.

As a committed and dedicated teacher she served in St Joseph’s Convent KR Nagar, Bethany Convent Naini, St Joseph’s Convent Bathinda, Sacred Heart Convent Ludiana, Bethany Convent Paradip, Bethany Convent Madikeri, Nazareth ConventBajpe, Stella Maris Convent Sultanpur, Maryvale Convent Kinnigoli, Bethany Convent Bendur and St Raymond’s Convent Vamanjoor. At the end of her life she rendered her services at Santa Cruz Convent Kulshekar.

Sr Roshni was the Headmistress at St Raymond’s High School at the time of her retirement in 2019. Since she had continuous cough she was taken to the doctor. It was then the doctor suspected cancer of the lung. Further tests confirmed that her cancer had already spread. For the past two years she was on medication. Often she was admitted to Fr Muller’s Hospital, Mangalore and each time she showed signs of improvement. For the past few months she was suffering from severe lung infection due to fluid in the lungs. In the month of May she was given chemo and at the end of May she was admitted to the hospital as she had developed severe cough. Two days later she returned to the community looking much improved. Again her condition deteriorated and was admitted to Fr Muller’s Hospital and was tested Covid positive. The sisters in the community day by day hoped for the better and none expected that her end would be so sudden. In the first week of June her stay in the hospital proved to be very difficult. Doctors and nurses gave the best care possible. Sr Ida Janet, the Superior, the sisters from the community and Sr Cicilia Mendonca, the Provincial Superior visited her. Though many from the community desired to visit her due to Covid restrictions were unable to do so. In spite of all medical care on 07 June at 10.00 am she breathed her last and offered her soul to God. Provincial Superior Sr Cicilia Mendonca, Sr Roshel, Sr Shubha, Sr Ida Janet, Sr Lavita, Sr Gracy Monica and her brother Fr Joseph SJ were present assisting Sr Roshni in her last journey to her Maker.

On June 8, 2021 at 3.00 pm the mortal remains of Sr Roshni were directly brought to the cemetery of Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar. Sr Rose Celine, the Superior General, Sr Cicilia Mendonca, the Provincial Superior and her Councillors, Sr Ida Janet, the Superior and the Sisters of Santa Cruz Convent, her siblings except her priest brother Fr Ivan OCD who is in US, nephews and nieces, few relatives and colleagues were present.

In the words of Shakespeare we say: “What! Gone without a word? Ah, so true love should do: It cannot speak: for truth hath better deeds than words to grace it.” Sr Roshni, we bid you farewell with joyful, loving memories.

Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace!

(Sr M Cicilia Mendonca BS)
